Several times each semester, all of the members of the Kanakuk community (Kanakuk, Kids Across America, Kanakuk Institute, KLIFE and Kanakuk Link Year) gather together to enjoy a time of worship and inspiration from the Word. We call these events “Chapel Talks.” This past week we had the great opportunity to hear from Joe White, President of Kanakuk Ministries and K-2 Director.
Joe spends a lot of time speaking at events around the country like AfterDark, Heart of a Mom, and High School Chapels when Kamp is not in session. No matter where he’s speaking, there's a good chance you will hear Joe talk about I'm Third. Such was the case this week in Chapel!
Many talks around the I'm Third topic will recount Johnny Ferrier's incredible testimony of living out I'm Third, which can be heard here. However, today was a bit different. Being that the theme for our summer camps this year is "I'm Third," Joe recalled stories of Uncle Bill Lance, the Father of Kanakuk, who taught Joe what it means to live out I'm Third. In his message he continued to break down the meaning and why it is such a pillar at Kanakuk.
Throughout scripture we consistently read about Jesus preaching the message of loving God and others. In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus shared that, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Earlier in the book of Matthew, Jesus shares that “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12)
There are several places in the Gospel where loving your neighbor as yourself is referred to as the “Royal Law.” It’s a continuous theme. What a joy to get to celebrate this as our new law through the Gospel! As his followers, we continue to live out this message in present day. We pray that this love continually increases in our hearts toward God and neighbor, and that this love flows out of our hearts into all that we do.
The last example Joe shared with us in chapel today was perfect for this season of Lent leading up to Easter. When Jesus is in the upper room in John 13 with his disciples, he knew that the entire universe was in His hands. He had the knowledge and weight on his heart, but he choose to love those around him and lower himself by serving and washing the feet of his disciples, even the one he knew would betray him, Judas.
In conclusion, Joe shared that Living I'm Third is simply living like Jesus, that all mankind ultimately desires to look into the mirror and see Jesus looking back at them. Then he ended with a beautiful poem that summarized the talk, which can be downloaded here.
