The Importance of Gratitude

Picture this—you wake up just like  any normal day. You yawn, stretch, rub the sleep out of your eyes, and… hang on a second. Why are you waking up on the floor? And why didn’t your alarm clock ring? Where’s the bed? Confused, and wondering if you’re still dreaming, you look around only to notice that not just the bed is missing. The very walls of your house and the roof over your head have all disappeared! You quickly dash to the kitchen—well, where it used to be— and see a lonely refrigerator, completely empty. You turn on the sink, but nothing runs out. You search for your phone to call your best friend, but for some reason, your contacts are all gone. It’s as if they’ve vanished into thin air.

Then, a voice rings in your head to let you know that you are indeed dreaming. But, the voice also asks a question that’s been filed away in your subconscious from hearing it several times before:

“What would you have today if you only had what you thanked God for yesterday?”

Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up thinking about all the things we want, that we forget to slow down and appreciate all that God has already given us. We live in a fast-paced world that fills us with messages of discontentment until we have achieved or obtained what we are being told to want. But what the world doesn’t tell us is that the material aspects of life won’t ever completely satisfy a soul’s need for love, belonging and connection. The things of this Earth will always leave us hungry for more. So how do we overcome this?

That’s where gratitude comes in.

“Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.”

Hebrews 12:28

A mindset that is constantly giving thanks to our King brings contentment, fulfillment and satisfaction. When we are living out of a place of gratefulness, our eyes are fixed not on the world, but on our Father who provides. Seeing the amazing things He does in our lives, how can our hearts not be filled with awe?

With a grateful perspective, we are able to view all that we have through new eyes.We can more regularly acknowledge that we have a good God who provides for our every need, both big and small  Whether we are expressing gratitude for our relationships with friends and family, the ability to make a good grade in school, the beauty of a vivid sunset, a summer at Kamp or any big or small thing in between, adopting a heart and mindset of gratitude can alter the way we approach each day.

Today, spend time reflecting on all that God has given you, and watch as that moves your heart to a refreshed place of appreciation. Let’s be a generation that is no longer consumed by the world, but consumed by admiration for our loving Father!

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.”

Colossians 3:15
