Join the Summer Social Challenge!

Last week, we talked all about the importance of prioritizing rest and recharging during summer vacation. When we rest and abide in the Lord, the Bible tells us our soul feels refreshed and renewed. But, finding time to rest and reflect amidst our busy lives can be difficult, because it takes some serious intentionality. This summer, in order to become better at slowing down and resting, we encourage our Kanakuk family to take frequent breaks from one specific distraction: social media.

As a whole, social media is a great tool, especially when it’s used to share positive news and encourage others. It’s fun to stay connected with family, receive hilarious Snapchats and give our friends a like or two on Instagram. But sometimes, if we’re not careful, social media can bog down our minds with comparison– as we begin to hold ourselves to a standard set by others we follow online.

Feelings of insecurity can creep in when we spend large portions of our day browsing through social media, because we begin to put too much value in others’ opinions.

As social media becomes more and more prevalent in our culture, we have a challenge for YOU this summer, as you strive to prioritize rest.

This summer, we’re encouraging you to trade 30 minutes of social media activity for 30 minutes of quiet time. This could mean going for a prayer walk, listening to worship music, journaling out your thoughts and prayers, reading through scripture or a devotional or simply just sitting and being with God.

Did you know that the Lord actually calls us to slow down and rest in Him? We vividly see that call in the two verses below.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

   I will be exalted among the nations,

   I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

“For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.” Hebrews 4:10 (NASB)

We truly believe that if you pledge to unplug from your phone or device for even 30 minutes to have intentional quiet time, you will experience the gifts of rest and spiritual refreshment this summer. The reward of spending time with our Heavenly Father will never disappoint you.

Are you up for the Summer Social Challenge? We’re excited for you to truly recharge in His presence this summer.
