What does it mean to be in the world, but not of it? Romans 12:2 calls us to think, act and speak in a way that is unique from the rest of the world. But, in busy seasons like this one, that’s not always easy to do. Each day we’re pulled in a million different directions, faced with a variety of challenges and what seems like endless responsibilities. Who has the time to look different when, as it is, we’re just trying to look like we have it together?
The answer might be simpler than we think. Immediately following the command to “not be conformed to the patterns of this world,” we are also told to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). That means that standing as a light for Christ requires inner growth-- growth only possible with the power of the Holy Spirit. Only by leaning daily on the Spirit and seeking wisdom from God’s Word can we live a life that is Christ-like and unique.
In a world that says “I’m first,” we have the opportunity to make a difference by living “I’m Third.” The “I’m Third” life is one that is marked by “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control”-- all of which can only be given to us by God (Galatians 5:22-23). Remaining in the world and not of it is not accomplished by trying harder or doing better. Instead, we should allow the Lord to daily change our hearts and grow us into who He wants us to be.
We serve a God who is faithfully committed to making us more like Himself. Only through trusting and seeking Him can we serve our families, friends and communities well. We would love to come alongside you in living out “I’m Third” with your family-- connect with us on Twitter & Facebook!
